The classic combat sport of powerful punches and footwork
Join This Class All ClassesBoxing is one of the oldest combat sports, with evidence of fist-fighting contests dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece (it was part of the ancient Olympic Games from 688 BC). Modern boxing as it's practiced today was shaped by the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, published in England in 1867, which introduced gloves, timed rounds, and the standard rules that form the basis of the sport worldwide.
Amateur and Olympic boxing is governed internationally by World Boxing / the International Boxing Association, while professional boxing is organised through several separate governing bodies. In India, boxing is represented nationally by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), which conducts national championships and selects athletes for international events including the Olympics.
